An almost endless series of outstanding Belgian and Dutch footballers have left their mark on world football. Despite the relatively small population of the Low Countries, they played and are still playing a leading role in many top international clubs.

Belgian stars.
The first world football star from the Low Countries was Raymond Braine. In 1930 the Antwerp player transferred to Sparta Prague, becoming the first professional Belgian footballer. The Belgian national team experienced its greatest years in the 1970s and 80s. At the 1972 European Championships, Belgium achieved third place with players such as Paul Van Himst and Wilfried Van Moer.
Dutch top players.
The most famous Dutch footballer in the pre-war years was Bep Bakhuys. Then Abe Lenstra and Faas Wilkes achieved fame shortly after the Second World War.
 
In 2018, the high-speed train can take you from Amsterdam to Brussels in an hour and currently takes you from Paris to Brussels in an hour and twenty minutes and from London to Brussels in less than two hours.
